Research has shown that religious beliefs and identification can provide individuals with a strong sense of self, which fosters resiliency and reduces anxiety. Religion and spiritual practices have also been found to reduce depression. Religion and spirituality can be very effective outlets to assist people who are coping with mental health difficulties or life stressors. It can provide a sense of purpose for individuals and create meaning for individuals grieving the loss of a loved one. Furthermore, religion provides a sense of support and wholeness within a community promoting healthy lifestyles.
Some common forms of religious and spiritual expression:
1. Prayer
2. Going to a place of worship regularly, practice of rituals, etc.
3. Reading sacred texts
4. Yoga, meditation, worship
5. Service, charity, sacrifice
6. Attending seminar, speeches, visiting sacred places
7. Living with particular life style or values
8. Seeking meaning or truth
It is important to also note that, although religion has been found to be helpful, it should be used to assist in coping with distress and should not be used as the sole method of treating mental illness. If psychological issues persist or distress worsens, it is important that these individuals seek assistance from a professional.
